verizon phone coverage and cost in Alaska

I know the Verizon use in Canada is more costly because it is out of the country but how about Alaska? Will my cell phone with nationwide coverage cost more to use? Thanks

RE: how do you make phone calls in BC and Yukon?

Sounds like pavement pilot got out of bed on the wrong side today.

RE: Class A to 5th. Wheel

We too are going to sell the class A and get a 5th wheel because of fuel prices. However the size of the fifth wheel will be in the 227 to 29 ft range with one slideout. We dont want anything so big it would require a 1 ton dually to pull. We are travelers more so than parking in one spot for long periods. If we stayed put more we would get something roomier. I think Jayco is a good compromise between the high quality, heavy weight rigs and the lightweights that may not hold up too well.

RE: Fuel milage by the pound

I have two thoughts on this. First, 18 wheelers with a gross weight of 80,000 can approach 7 mpg. They are into aerodynamics and low engine rpms. Next, I had a 20 ft cargo trailer that I made two trips with moving 1300 miles each way. The trailer just had the usual box shape. I checked the mpg each way on both trips to see if the weight of the load(it was loaded heavy one way and empty the other) affected the mpg or not. Results-it got the same mpg loaded or empty so the was the wind drag doing a number on it. I pulled it with my 1994 Dodge 2500 cummins diesel 3.54 rear end. It gets 22mpg hwy by itself and 13 1/2 towing this trailer.

How is hwy 93 between Jasper and Kalispel

What can we expect on Rt 93 pulling a TT? Are there steep grades or anything in particular to be concerned about? It looks like it might be a scenic drive on the map and I already am aware there is a toll to pay. Thanks

RE: New to RVing

An easy way to keep a check on your bearings is when you pull into a rest area, as you head to the jonh walk around the rig and put your hand on each wheel. It should be cool. If one or more is hot you know there is a problem and and can take care of it before it leaves you stranded. Also I like to repack the bearings myself so I know it has been done./ There are RV shops out there that will tell you they did it or if they do they just put grease on the outer bearing so it looks done. Also keep a check on the tire pressure. Those are the two things most apt to leave you broke down.

RE: Road to McCarthy?

Thanks for all the replies to my question. I did find a website on the vans and found the cost from Chitina was almost $100 each round trip to McCarthy. There are 4 of us. The suggestion to stay at the BLM campground and drive to TV in sounds like the way to go for me.

RE: Fuel Prices, Economy...Will this affect your plans??

We have a Alaska trip planned from Florida this summer and we are still going. The only change is we are leaving the MH here and pulling a 18 ft TT that we bought used. The gas savings will pay for the TT.

RE: Have you ever

We have several times taken a 10 day trip with just a general idea where we are going. These trips are not much more than 1000 miles, stay off interstates and away from cities. Find a small campground, stay about two nights in each and in the evening drive to a nearby small town and go for a walk in the evening up and down the main street. Maybe have a beer and then head back to the rig. Trips are circular so we dont come back the same roads. We travel only the two lanes, very relaxing and enjoyable.

RE: Recommended top 5 travel trailers 26-30'

Sunline was one of the best but went out of business a couple years ago so I would say a used Sunline or a Sunnybrook. Sunnybrook also makes a lower priced line the you check out on Sunnybrook website.I believe Cedar Creek was one of them.

RE: park models

I agree we should have a forum for park models. Many snowbirds live in them for the winter> The trend may grow with gas prices going up.

RE: Trailer vs. Motor Home - Top 5 Reasons Please

I have had a TT,MH and a fifth wheel. A trailer gets my vote because I feel more self sufficient and relaxed with it. I can take care of most problems that occur. A MH is too complex for me to work on and I dont want to screw up anything that costly.

RE: Wind Deflector on the TV, Good Idea or Waste of $$

Commercial bigs rigs have them but they may drive 100,000 plus miles per year(some over 200,000 milesper year). The payback is very good even with a small mpg gain. Not so with the average rv. I believe they help if positioned right. Thats all I know.

Road to McCarthy?

Has anyone here driven the unpaved 60 mile road to McCarthy? It sounds interesting and I read it is an old railroad bed. We will be towing an 18 ft TT and would like a opinion whether it is reasonably safe to go there by someone who has done it. Thanks in advance.

RE: best "inexpensive" towing vehicle for 19-23' TT

For safety I would get a tow vehicle with more than enough tow rating,a 3/4 ton PU. Otherwise the trailer would strain the tow vehicle and handling would be poor. Also heavy duty tires such as a 3/4 ton would have do not flex under the hitch weight. That causes blowouts of the rear tires of your tow vehicle(tires which flex=heat=blowout). With the 3/4 you may not need the sway control and equalizer hitch with the size trailer you are considering.

RE: Accordion Requests Anyone?

Hello from a fellow accordionist. Have been playing since I was 11 and am now 70. I have four of them now. A Petosa reedless,a Titano Virtuoso, another full size Iorio that I am taking to Alaska this summer and a 60 bass that I am selling. I am not professional but do play for a few parties but mostly for my own enjoyment. I dont usually get into the campground jam sessions because playing by ear is not something I do well but I really enjoy getting together with another accordion. Each person can learn something there. Hope to see you down the road somewhere. We are full time florida residents and do our main travelling in the summer. Most people dont realize what beautiful music an accordion can make. Oh well. Take care. Arnold K

RE: Purchasing smaller unit to go to Alaska

We already bought a small TT for our trip this summer to Alaska for three months. We have a diesel p.u. to pull it that gets 13 1/2 towing. Our class A and new toad is staying home. Three reasons for t his, not getting our new toad dinged and we will save enough in fuel to pay for the TT. Also getting around and into more remote places easier. The TT is a 1995 Sunline 20 ft that only needed cosmetic improvement. We have it finished it and was a fun project.

RE: Sunset Creek 279RB, whaddya think?

Sunset Creek is also sold by one of the internet dealers so you can compare prices. Possibly RV wholesalers.com but I am not sure. They will give you their price.

RE: Best 18ft TT

Some 18 ft trailers are including the tongue also in the measurement and some are not. We recently bought a 1995 Sunline TT 18 ft(not including the tongue). It only needed cosmetic improvement, everyhing worked. We just are finishing it with repaint, new decals curtains, carpet etc. Looks great and we are happy. We are heading to Alaska this summer(just the wife and I).You cant have everything in a rig that size. Ours does not have a couch but it has a bed with a real mattress. One person could live in it I suppose if the weather doesnt keep you trapped inside.Good luck, have fun. I researched rigs first and Sunline is a good one. They went out of business a couple of years ago but there are still used ones out there.

RE: MH Insurance & Your credit score

I recently was notified by my insurer,Hartford, that I did not get the best rate because credit agencies could find no record of me. I have not owed anyone a dime for at least 15 years, never been late with a payment before that etc. Also I have several other quotes before I renewed and that shows up as credit checks which is also a negative. Oh well. I would like to pay the ins. bill with a smile but it takes money.
